How A ZERO Star Recruit Became An NBA Superstar

**The Rise of John Moran: From Small Town to the NBA**

From a zero-star recruit from a small town to the most electrifying player in the NBA today, this is John Moran’s small-town dream story.

**The Home in Dalzell, South Carolina**

Not only would Demetrius Jamel Morant, better known as John Morant, make his dreams come true, but his father also teased that he had much bigger basketball dreams than the town of Dalzell, South Carolina, population just over 2,000, where his son he was born.

Morant won a state basketball championship in high school playing alongside Ray Allen before going on to play at Division II Claflin University. Considering a professional career abroad, he was ready to live his dream until news changed his life forever: Morant’s wife, Jamie, was pregnant.

Giving up on his aspirations, Morant directed all his energy into helping John make a career in basketball. To build a balanced hand, a small cement basketball court was built in the backyard. It was here that Morant inspired John to be great, and it was where John fell in love with the routine, from mastering the art of the backflip to doing tractor tire flips.

The two would spend hours at a time working on John’s skills and athleticism. Morant, looking back on the sacrifice, said, “Instead of going to play basketball, he stayed to raise me. That’s my motivation. I’m living my dream and his dream now.”

**The Journey in the Minor Leagues**

Morant had to work much harder to achieve this, as his physical stature did not indicate a future NBA player. He was just six feet tall when he was a freshman in high school. Not being recruited by colleges the summer before his senior year, Morant was a late addition to a camp organized by Chandler Parsons of the Murray State AAU Program.

Basketball assistant James Kane was there watching another player, but upon hearing balls bouncing in an auxiliary gym, he decided to check it out. Kane was impressed with Morant’s play in a three-on-three game, and Murray State’s recruitment of Morant began.

**The Emerging Star in the NCAA and NBA**

Morant’s college career was impressive, leading him to declare for the 2019 NBA Draft. He was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies second overall, and in his rookie season, Morant proved he was more than just “noise.” “. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Over the next few seasons, Morant not only cemented his place in the league but also led the Grizzlies to the playoffs. His electrifying style of play and astonishing numbers demonstrated that he not only belonged in the NBA, but had the potential to lead and transform a franchise.

**The Current Season Featured**

In the current season, Morant continued to impress, being selected for his first All-Star Game and being named a starter. His remarkable performance in several games, including a 52-point performance, solidified his position as the face of the Grizzlies and perhaps the future of the league.

Morant’s journey from small town to becoming a rising star in the NBA is a testament to determination, talent and hard work. As he continues to shine on the court, expectations will only increase, and the next frontier is postseason success. Based on his track record, it appears to be only a matter of time before Morant reaches new heights in the NBA.
